I designed a body balance ability monitor to help pensioners prevent falls that lead to fracture, dislocation, or worse.

With literature research and discussion with my advisor, I sought to help our grandmas/grandpas to be constantly aware of their balance ability. Existing solutions involve expensive equipment or even a full-fledged lab, so I aspire to attain the same goal with a wearable device.

Taking advantage of the rich resources in the open-source hardware community, I quickly built up a 3-pieces prototype that collects real-time data from waist and ankle accelerometers. However, my challenge turned out to be designing a whole new methodology that correlates acceleration with balance ability. I first tried to analyze the period, yet soon discovered that even for the same person, the walking pace could change drastically within a day. Then I moved the focus to the tiny "spikes" of the gait patterns, which ended up being a wild goose chase. Eventually, I settled with the Fourier transform, which vividly demonstrates the interplay between the spectrums of the waist and ankles.

To prove the value of my work, I tested at home, on the street, and even at the China Rehabilitation Research Center. Taking advantage of the new data, I eventually produced the formula for an easy-to-understand Balance Index. Later on, I built upgrade models and developed a smartphone app. Now reliable BI reading can be obtained after walking for a couple of minutes, and my project earned the grand prize at a national science fair.
