“An institution where any person can find instruction in any study,” I watched the Charter Day Video and the sentence hits my heart. Browsing diverse courses listed on the website of Cornell’s College of Arts and Science, I knew I found the right college---one that embraces great variety, passion, and possibility.
Coming from long lines of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners, my parents have both studied and now serve at the prestigious China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, where Ms. Youyou Tu extracted artemisinin to save millions of lives from the clutches of malaria, and just became the first citizen of mainland to receive the Nobel Prize in natural sciences. Under their influence, scientific exploration has been my dream for years. I taught myself statistics and knowledge on traffic light timing to solve the traffic problem around me. I participated in an immunological study under the guidance of a professor affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. What is more, I am fascinated by the colorful herbs. During past vacations, I often traveled along with Father to observe cherished medicinal plants around China. We visited X base for Y in Yunnan, found the wild Z in Inner Mongolia, and harvested hawthorn in Hebei.
However, when I learned that most Chinese universities only offer STEM courses for science majors, I was troubled because I do not want to give up my passion for liberal arts either. For me, liberal arts bind our souls together, regardless of time and space. The exuberant colors in Van Gogh's paintings, the alternating motifs and dynamic patterns in Beethoven's work, and the shocking reform described in the Les Miserable are all fruits of our self-doubting and fighting against the uncontrollable destiny. I shared the emotions of the characters, listened to their stories, and ruminated on their beliefs, all of which gave me insights into humanity.
What should I do?
This summer vacation, I went to the endless meadow of A to serve local patients. The altitude of the location is quite high, and I found out that the medicines given out were mainly related to hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The culprits seemed to be the harsh environment and the simple, high-protein diet of the locals. However, an interesting thing happened when I later visited a nearby TCM herb plantation. A special herb, one that only grows under the specific climate and soil conditions, turned out to be the essential ingredient of the medicines I gave out previously. It seems that nature is nursing us all; it protects us from disease but hurts us when we neglect our responsibilities.
Standing on the endless meadows alone, watching the shimmering river flowing by, I suddenly felt I was melting with the meadows. A piece of the whole universe, we possess the vastness as the universe does. Our hearts, minds, and bodies have great potential just as any tree or flower has. I have an unbounded future, and should not deny the infinite opportunities for me to grow and blossom. I am a drop in the ocean, but in the meantime, I am inseparable from all waters of the heavens and earth. It is by then I made up my mind to broaden my future and pursue versatile education.
Cornell University is famous for her biological research, and A&S is the right college for me, in which I can learn not only biological science but also liberal arts. With more than 40 majors and 55 minors to choose from, the interdisciplinary research offered to every student, and the mission to foster curiosity and new ideas at all times, A&S will surly open my mind and let me find my own academic journey.
“I think it is a beautiful struggle we had as human beings, wanting to know the world around us, to be hungry for knowledge.” Said one A&S graduate. I cannot agree more.
