I have long been proud of my father, who engages in legal cases and serves justice as an attorney. However, often I witnessed him spending hours doing tedious tasks like filling in the same information repeatedly. I thought he could use a certain computer program to reduce the workload. But he never seemed to find such software out there to achieve the specific goal. Thus, I began to utilize my computer knowledge to build something from scratch.
Having no prior experience, I first analyzed user needs --- how typical law cases are filed (civil case, criminal case, administrative case, non-lawsuit representation, etc.). Constantly consulting my father, I clarified details before any misunderstanding could cost me extra effort.
After comprehending the basic requirements of the software, I started coding based on a multi-part plan. I envisaged the user interactions with the product and tailored the UI. The next item on the list would be the implementation: When looking at my father entering the information into a Word 2010 form, I lost in thoughts and kept asking myself, “What would the next-gen MS Office forms be like?” It did not take long for me to recall the experience of helping my high school teacher --- I was summoned to design an intricate form for him. Like my father, he chose Word originally, but later I recommended Excel as a better alternative. With specific labels on both columns and rows, it offered a clear approach to locating the cell. This scenario was similar, so why can't I combine the features of these two powerful productivity tools?
Before programming core components, I, intending to ensure the validity of the implementation, designed a series of small tests for individual features. Fortunately, my testing projects came up with the exact outputs I expected. Nevertheless, as I thought that I had overcome the most difficult part of the course, I never realized that there were many other challenges. Relying upon textbooks and programming forums on the Internet, I kept solving puzzles and ultimately presented the first version to my father. It was soon put into use in the office.
This was not an end but a start. According to some of my father’s colleagues, the application still has some shortcomings, such as lack of print functionalities and sluggish UI response. Aiming to address these problems, I am currently revising my code. Even though it might not seem much now, it is worth my time if any differences are made.
