Lying still on the surgical table, I closed my eyes driven by fear. I heard the whisper of doctors surrounding me, soon they would bend my arm to various angles, trying to reduce the dislocated elbow joint. Hours later, I left with an arm cast. When the anesthetic wore off, the pain started to haunt me like a ghost. More than once, I woke up at 3 a.m. and even started to cry, which seemed rather ridiculous for a recognized school basketball star. The only consolation turned out to be my black marker, which I used to track the date I could get back to school and the basketball court.
However, at the moment the cast was removed, I was petrified. I felt like I did not own my arm and elbow anymore, and they simply refused to follow my will. After I returned home, disappointment and annoyance got the better of me. Instead of starting rehabilitation right away, I could not help but criticize the “stupid” requirement that asked me to move my arm to and fro. How was that even possible? I could hardly move my arm in any direction.
Suddenly, I remembered the kind faces of the doctors. I was sure that they were doing their best to help, so I must act, too. After applying Voltaren to my elbow, I tried to follow the physical therapy procedure. The pain instantly kicked in, but I told myself, “The real sportsmanship is that aces won’t give up in front of obstacles." Placing my arm against the wall, I marked the position of my fingers. And then I stretched out my arm upwards. I moved my fingers and arm as far as possible until the pain became too much. The mark rapidly went higher and higher, and I also felt better physically and psychologically, practicing twice a day.
Pushing my limit further and further, I was rejuvenated and became once again the athletic boy I had been. Besides being energetic on the court, I also pass my passion for basketball to peers and kids around me.

Since the game Counter-Strike came into my life, computer has become one of my best companions. I was fascinated by the elaborate 3D models of characters and weapons displayed on the LCD screen. However, my understanding of computers was limited to entertainment until I enrolled in the AP CS class. Starting from basic Boolean logic and loop, I recognized the incredible power of computers. By using simple “if else” statements, I finished my first program, a simple arithmetic calculator. The sense of achievement immediately fulfilled me, despite the fact that I must put my video game aside and debug for hours. As time went by, I saw the infinite possibilities offered by programming languages, in addition to the close connection between coding and our lives. Subways stations are created as objects in an array, ID numbers are generated through loops, and map apps find the shortest route via Dijkstra’s algorithm. In this way, I believe computer science will continue to improve the way we interact with this world in the days to come.
Besides, the experience of picking up a new program language, Python, at Cornell Summer College encouraged me to delve into this young, lively subject even more. Facing unfamiliar concepts, I could hardly catch up with the professor’s fast-paced teaching. If daily assignments were boulders before me, the final project stood in front of me just like the Great Wall: We must simulate a banking system, complete with the GUI of an ATM. The sample code of a minimal graphical user interface was all we got to start with. Overwhelmed and worried, I began to gather information from technical blogs and books. Following the instructions, I created several windows and buttons for users to deposit and withdraw. Having solved all the bugs and errors, I finally packed up the program and also decorated the UI with colors and WordArt that I learned all by myself. Such initiative granted me the opportunities to explore “jewels” beyond basic knowledge. Due to the continuous development of computer science, self-study is necessary to help me overcome academic challenges as an undergraduate.
