I had never seen kids among blind runners. When I asked why, the leader told me that blind kids did not have a chance to run for adult volunteer guides would not fit their speed and stature.
However, when I invited members of track varsity teams to join, they were very hesitant, thinking it was just for show and the blind kids would not make it.
And the blind kids themselves agreed. "Blind people can't run." A kid told me so.
I was participating in Running for light, a 10km running charity festival for the blind community. Seeing the dark circles under the eyes and chapped lips, I shared my first blindfold running experience with the kids: my fear when overwhelmed by darkness, my trust issues with my running partner, and my uncertainty about the remaining distance to the finishing line. But I also covered the breeze across my face, the fresh smell of the summer, and the bliss that came after the anxiety. Their faces softened as they stood up to eagerly ask questions.
“You are not blind. You are just going to explore this wonderful world with eyes closed.” I concluded and presented a weekly tryout schedule. Then I let the volunteers introduce themselves. Starting with a 50m trial run, volunteers and I developed tailored training plans for individual kids.
I had not understood the full connotation of my mission till the day of the running festival. When the starter pistol was fired, I saw all the blind kids and high school athletes rushing from the starting point, a most alluring and touching scene. I witnessed them breaking down both outer and inner barriers, just as barriers around me dissolved like snow in early spring.
