I don't look at business as a zero-sum game.

---Marc Benioff, Founder of Salesforce

Running a high school club is not unlike competing in a cutthroat market where potential competitors lurk around every corner. If I want to keep my club thriving, I need to find a solution by either striking them with force or by submitting myself as an underdog. Or is there a third way?

This summer I heard that two of my schoolmates wanted to found a new English Debate Club (EDC), which might not be good news for my English Debate Association (EDA). They even conducted a talent hunt targeting the EDA, making attempts to persuade members to "try something new." Their confidence emanated from the fact that they had just started a new chapter of the National Forensic League, a prestigious debate tournament sponsor, in our city. Honestly, I did not want to give up the responsibilities and the honor of leading my club, but I also did not want to deprive my fellow members of their opportunities in the National Forensic League. It was a delicate situation that I had to carefully consider.

I took the first step and contacted the would-be founders of EDC. I praised their efforts and then frankly shared the lessons of running my own club in the past year with them. I explained that the process of establishing a similar club would waste a considerable portion of their time and energy, which could and should be used to plan more quality activities for the debaters of our school. In the end, I invited them to head a new EDA department as an alternative with a promise of substantial freedom under the supervision of the EDA Council. "You don't have to reinvent the wheel. And members can have the best of both worlds in this way." Hence, we signed an agreement that eventually gave birth to the most popular student organization on campus.

Business is not a zero-sum game, and leadership is all about finding win-win solutions. Bearing this in mind, I am preparing myself for the journey ahead.

We always praise critical thinking as the hallmark of modern education. But truly, what is critical thinking?

The first lecture of my Cornell Summer Program finally gave me the answer. I was impressed when I saw American students quickly identifying the questions that confused them and actively contributing to the discussion. On the other hand, I, along with other Chinese students, thought we did not have any questions regarding the professor's lecture and found it hard to acquire our insights. Ironically, when American students asked, we did not have readily available answers. In my home country, we are accustomed to viewing teachers as authoritative figures and are not trained to challenge textbooks or form personal opinions, as these would not improve our exam scores. The transition to a different education system turned out to be a real challenge.

Determined to overcome this obstacle and become a paradigm for the rest of the Chinese students, I carefully reviewed the 150-page daily reading assignment. The first time I comprehended the text and listed all points involved. The second time I contemplated both sides of the arguments and searched the Internet to cross-reference other sources. The third time I considered whether there was any inconsistency in the writer's arguments and delved deeply into those elusive parts, making every effort to figure out things on my own.

"Professor, what do Geddes and Howard's views have in common?" an eager American student threw out a tough question. Now it was up to me to show my efforts! "It's their idea of regional planning to solve current environmental and social stress." Then, I expounded my view with thorough analysis and supporting examples. "Good, good, I have never thought about it before, but now I can use it for my entire life. Chinese students do have strong critical thinking ability. Why not participate more in our class?" When Dr. Robert Young made such a comment, I gained the confidence to be a critical thinker and constructive member of the new academic community.
