What is your proudest accomplishment that doesn’t appear on your résumé — an act for which you did not receive a trophy, grade, or other type of outward recognition?

Gifted young artists in our school belong to one group or the other, no exception. The School Chorus boasts its seasoned instructors, who also teach in famed conservatories in the capital. The Orchestra gave influential performances, not only on campus but also at home and abroad. They both have a long history and they are proud of their respective accomplishments in the past. What this actually implies is that a soprano would seldom think highly of a bassoonist (and vice versa), for each considers himself or herself as the better.

In my three years as a junior high student, I served as an outstanding Chorus member, in charge of helping new singers and coordinating section rehearsal. In the end, I even received the high honor of hosting a reception for hundreds of foreign guests.

Nevertheless, I wanted to explore other aspects of music, to the extent that I would do the unthinkable--to switch to the Orchestra at the beginning of my senior high years. I am also on a national chorus, so this allows me to enjoy the best of the two worlds.

In the audition, the teacher warned me and she was right. Most of the Orchestra members knew each other since junior high, so it was not easy to blend in with the new group. More important, they could already act as a whole during a performance, but I did not even know the pieces well. With determination and initiative, I spent extra time practicing and attempted to befriend everyone. Gradually, I proved my passion for fine arts and earned acceptance from others. Earlier this year, we just won first place in the Beijing Student Art Festival as a team. Once again, occasionally crossing the line turned out to be more than helpful.
