Honestly, "Magis in my life" is too big an issue for a 12th grader. But for the time being, I believe I may carve out a path in the Peer Mentor Initiative, hopefully turning it into something that endures and empowers.

In the vibrant Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, visitors are often marveled at the modern skyline and friendly residents, since this fifth largest metropolis in Mainland China has a history of merely four decades. However, I am more concerned with the less satisfactory aspects of my hometown, especially the education for the children from local underserved communities. Since their parents do not qualify for the Hukou (the household registration system that confines Chinese citizens to their often underdeveloped birthplaces), these kids are forced to make a difficult choice: leave their parents, who are making a living in Shenzhen, and receive the tuition-free education; or stay with their parents and forfeit their education benefits, for the premium public education resources of the city are only reserved for Hukou holders.

As a student, I can do nothing to change the unfair system, but I can help my fellow students one by one. Not only do I try to teach them classroom knowledge, but I also intend to share my perspectives with them and understand their world. Together with three like-minded partners, we want to contribute our energy to bring positive changes to their lives, just as QuestBridge does in the United States. To date, we have received support from various individuals and organizations, and Shenzhen Volunteer Association has become our staunch backer---they provide three classrooms, and a dozen volunteers from their side will join our effort. We have recently completed the planning phase and will enter the execution phase by early 2016.

In the long run, PMI may extend beyond the borders of my high school campus, my neighborhood, my city, or even my country. I want to serve more students in need (I have personally met many amiable, ambitious students with speech disorder or hearing loss) and catch the attention of the mass. My education at Boston College and experiences borrowed from mature American NGOs will further fuel the mission. All I wish is to create equal educational opportunities for students at my age, giving them the resources and possibilities they deserve.

And Magis is full of possibilities, for the world or for myself.
