My interest in chemistry started in the laboratory, when I observed those marvelous changes in test tubes and beakers. From the magic of Tollens’ reagent to the power of sodium metal, I saw the hidden and wonderful side of our nature. As time went by, the coursework and labs became more and more challenging, but this only stimulated my passion further. At a time, we were required to determine salinity by evaporation. By heating the evaporating dish, I witnessed the crystallization of salt with my own eyes and thought nothing could go wrong. However, I soon found out that salt crystals formed a thick shell on the dish surface due to overheating and could not be easily removed. To weigh the salt, I had to repeat the whole process from the start and constantly stir the brine with a glass rod. The timing must be perfect for the water to be fully removed. By trial and error, I learned from my mistakes and cultivated my attention to detail.

I also found chemistry closely connected to everyday life. For instance, to characterize the colorant density of Gatorade, I painstakingly prepared food dye solutions of various densities. By measuring with a spectrometer, I was able to plot the relationship between the intensity of specific wavelengths and the colorant density. With the plot at hand, it was quite easy to tell the colorant density of Gatorade or even other soft drinks, which certainly helped me make informed grocery choices.

As a sports fan, I want to create the basketball shoes of my dream and believe that chemistry will assist me with this goal. Though I am not much of a designer, I might eventually synthesize new shoe materials that are light-weighted, flexible, and resilient, one that will surpass Nike Flyknit in every way. I could also revamp the soles to provide extra shock absorption and friction. Being a chemist would be a shortcut to my ambition.

"No Charity Bazaar this year." The faculty advisor of our club told me in a bland tone on the phone. "The new policy banning business on campus has to be enforced."

It was not good news for me and others at the TINK club, the voluntary society of my high school. I felt obliged to continue a beloved school tradition but first wanted to hear what my peers had to say. Some suggested writing a signed petition. A few argued that we might as well give up. Facing a stalemate, I stood up and said, "We are going to make concessions, but we are going to make it work!" Having prepared several alternative plans, I knocked at the door of the principal's office. He was obviously surprised, but admitted that we might have a point after reading our proposal. "You are not going to sell anything. But students may indeed order gifts online on their own and the club may deliver these from the mailroom to the hands of the recipients."

In an ambivalent mood, my club members and I mobilized to prepare the upcoming Year-end Courier, a new name that better reflected the nature of the event. Though we could not generate any revenue to improve the facilities of our partner elementary school this time, we were still able to serve and have fun. On Christmas Eve, gifts had nearly filled up the mailroom. Our team spent a whole night sorting and packing them by destination. Then when the class was over on Dec. 25th, we split up with parcels in backpacks and plastic bags. I made my share of deliveries and in the meantime coordinated the whole operation with a smartphone. All presents had made their way to recipients by 6 p.m.

On one hand, I defied authority, a bold act that could lead to unpredictable consequences. On the other hand, I preserved a long-lasting tradition. To be honest, it was a difficult choice, but I am confident that I will always think hard and do what’s best for my community in the days to come.

GPA 3.6 TOEFL 100 ACT 31
