“I will prove myself to be one of the best prefects in X School.”

Many friends would not believe a line like this came from a quiet, shy Asian girl, yet I did put it at the beginning of my prefect application letter. There is actually a fairly simple motivation behind it: I wished to be personally involved in the planning of the coming Talent Show. The last one was forced to be canceled because of poor organization and limited participation. But as someone who has a genuine passion for fine arts and student life, I could not allow the situation to continue.

I thought it would be a good start for me to rally support from students and faculty. Yet, to be honest, I was timid then and quite afraid of rejection. Fortunately, the first teacher I solicited for assistance turned out to be more than helpful. Encouraged immensely, I went on to seek others’ help: senior prefects took time to polish the crude application with me, and the headmaster happily let me shoulder more duties that would be considered my qualification. Things were easier than my imagination.

Another episode worth mentioning in the campaign would be a mini-contest organized by the headmaster. He requested students to sort themselves in 30 seconds, and each group should have the same headcount and boy-to-girl ratio. Initially, this seemingly trivial task did not work out as intended. While the time was running out, no one was ready to make the first move. In the dire moment, I broke the stalemate by switching to the group with the fewest girls, and others soon followed my suit. The invisible barrier collapsed in no time.

My efforts indeed yielded fruit in the end. I have earned my chance yet I knew it was the start of the real challenge. Initially, I resorted to conventional means like posters and newsletters, but the result was less than satisfactory. After collecting feedback from close friends, I realized that most of my peers were too shy to be on the stage. To overcome this obstacle, I decided to put a personal touch on the activity, and eventually scheduled one-on-one meeting with all 200 members of the school community. Many were moved by my dedication, and we ended up having a marvelous show, comprising music, dance, mime, and instrumental improvisation. Four other girls and I even performed our self-choreographed dance, which we had been rehearsing for weeks after school. Many claimed the event to be the best in their entire high school life.

Now, I am still trying very hard to fulfill my promise made back then, so the experience is not exactly an accomplishment yet. That being said, I did witness a kind of growth, in which I became aware of the fact that I can indeed make a difference with my own actions.
