University of Wisconsin-Madison offers an unparalleled way that brings me closer to my ambition as an environment-concerned ecologist. Having more than thirty biology-related undergraduate majors on campus, it boasts unique resources that are hard to find elsewhere. For one, at Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies I may partake in the Environmental Studies Certificate Program, where I can immediately work on ecological problems of the day with a multi-disciplinary emphasis. In my junior and senior years, I can even become a research assistant in one of the several research centers, such as the Environmental Resources Center or the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center. These, when combined with the university’s unique trait of encouraging discovery and problem-solving, will ensure a fruitful college experience that gives substance and meaning to my dream.

As a student at Wisconsin, I expect to resume my water body research and cross-reference the new and old data, which may indicate key solutions for the challenges faced by my hometown. I surveyed a lake near my hometown in the recent summer. Despite the efforts of Chinese government to restore the aquatic environment, its water quality remained unbelievably horrible. Clusters of algae mass suspended blatantly in samples, and lab tests showed that nitrogen and phosphorus contents of all five sites exceeded the upper limit of the state standard (2.0mg/L and 0.2mg/L, respectively). Later, through additional investigations, I learned that biodiversity in the lake had already been severely compromised by long-term industrial pollution and annual algae blooms, which weakened its self-purification ability to the extent that even artificial water quality improvement would be challenging.

When I was in elementary school, the world of flora and fauna was my Neverland. Back then my hands were always covered by mud and plant juices, for I spent countless afternoons in an overgrown garden, identifying various plants and insects via my five senses. At thirteen, when first shown to a full-fledged biological laboratory, I fell happily into another beautiful world under the microscope. There I tried to prepare my own slides and never ceased to be awed by the formations of cells. Majoring in biological science has always been my plan, but now, having realized the power of biology to preserve our world is yet to be unleashed, I see new meaning in my career choice.

During the lake survey, when earnestly discussing with an ecology undergraduate about the seasonal change of water quality and possible ways to restore the aquatic environment, I suddenly found that I was no longer the wild kid chasing after bugs, nor the naive adolescent charmed by colorful cells. As time went by, my crush on life science slowly turned into an adamant faith and sense of responsibility. Pure love of life is not enough, and I have seen my obligation to use knowledge to protect and rejuvenate.

GPA 3.4 TOEFL 96 ACT 29
