理工科个人陈述的华丽转身

理工的学生不容易。

首先是微积分和线性代数。柯西不等式,本征向量外加联篇累牍的微分积分公式,已经杀死了数以亿计的脑细胞。

接着是大学物理和大物实验。刚搞清楚刚体的转动惯量,却又不小心把电流表当电压表用了。

以为这些就是结束么?错!噩梦才刚刚开始,从实验室兔子到C语言算符优先顺序,从薛定谔之猫到PID控制参数,各路大神都虎视眈眈,准备在你最放松,最不注意的时候,狠狠给来上那么一下。轻则浪费两三天得不到结果,重则让导师大发雷霆,批评毫无天赋而后扫地出门。

听说理工科学生出国前途不错,你在历经九九八十一难以后,做了大研,灭了GT,然后却发现对Personal Statement一筹莫展,面对着空空如也的Word硬是干坐一小时打不出半个词?

一年以前,在初次见到他的时候,小冯正是这么一个愁眉苦脸的状态。虽然他绞尽脑汁,数易其稿,再花费重金请一位上外英语系研究生将其翻译成中文。然而,在看到下面这篇文章后,他大吃一惊。

小冯直言不讳,说涉及项目描述的不是很专业,不像一个内行的话语。然而,他却无法指出具体是什么地方不专业,也不能确定究竟怎样才算是内行。带着这些疑问,他找到了陈欣老师。

陈老师并没有急着回答他的问题。他提示小冯先仔细回忆做过的各个项目,在现有中文材料的基础上,提炼出专业上的创新之处和能够具体体现自己品质的地方。小冯恍然大悟,原来虽然他之前准备了20多页的中文初稿,但全都是平铺直述的描述。这样,不但无法体现自己作为一名申请者独到的优势,甚至会把没有背景的读者完全绕晕。单纯的翻译缩写这种素材,结果可想而知。

虽然理工科学生个人陈述写作应该被视为一个充分个性化的过程,但陈老师必须指出有几点还是通用的。首先,文章要有一个大气有力的开头(但不一定要过分炫耀或掉书袋),能够引起高学历美国读者的共鸣。拙劣(伯乐被错误的翻译成了中餐馆的名字)的引用中国谚语和典故只能会起到反效果。其次,一般不建议直白的写上流水账式的步骤,因为读者并不一定有相关的专业背景从而能完全理解整个项目的发展过程,同时字数的限制也令我们很难在短短一段中把项目完全阐述清楚。再次,可以适当的使用一些专业术语,但务必用到点上。一个项目能体现出申请者的素质,不外乎是证明申请者能克服困难,曾经解决过重要的专业问题,或者巧妙改进了现有的方案。能清晰有逻辑的把相关思维过程成果说清楚,就能给个人陈述增色不少。还有值得一题的是,理工科学生也要有软素质,在专业技能上同样优秀的一批申请者中,能够有效与他人沟通并能帮教授分摊管理任务的学生毫无疑问会脱颖而出。一般来说,这种成熟度和独立性将极大的增加这些全面发展学生获得录取并最终圆满完成学业的可能性。

“这正是我想要的!”反复读过新完成的个人陈述后,小冯有力的点了点头。几个月以后,陈老师意外的接到了一个来自他的越洋电话。此时,这位年轻学子充满幽默与表述力的描述已经与当初判若两人。
